Sand Casting

One of the great advantages of sand casting is that it is able to cast just about any alloy, especially those with a high melting point, such as nickel, titanium and steel.

Metals used in Sand Casting includes:

Alloy Steel

Cast Iron

Aluminum

Copper

Magnesium

Nickel

Stainless Steel

Carbon Steel

The following alloys are widely used in the sand casting process:

Aluminum Alloys

Melting temperature:  1220 °F (660 °C)

Cast Steel

Melting Temperature:2500 °F (1371 °C)

Cast Iron

Melting Temperature: 1990-2300 °F (1088-1260 °C)

Brass Alloys

Melting Temperature: 1980 °F (1082 °C)

You can find a more in-depth discussion on the types of alloys than can be sand casted by visiting our Metals that can be Sand Cast page.

Die Casting

When it comes to this metal casting process, the following metals can be casted:

Aluminum

The following aluminum alloys are used in die casting:

A380

A383

A413

Magnesium

A fully recyclable, strong alloy, it is almost lighter than plastic. Alloy AZ91D, which is a high purity alloy, is the most widely specified magnesium die casting alloy. It has a shear strength of 140 MPa, a hardness of 62 Brinell and a tensile strength of 230 MPa.

Zinc

One of the easiest alloy to cast using this process, zinc die casting is able to offer a better alternative in terms of cost when compared to fabricated, pressed, stamped and machined parts. The following Zinc alloy compositions are regularly die casted:

Zamak 2

Zamak 3

Zamak 5

Zamak 7

ZA8

ZA27

Brass

A zinc and copper alloy, brass is used in processes where aesthetically pleasing products are required. Used both as-casted or polished, it has an impact strength of 40 ft/lb, a hardness of 91 Brinell and a shear strength of 37 (psi x 1000).

Other Alloys

Lead and Tin:
Mostly used in instances where special forms of corrosion resistance is required, these alloys boasts with a high density and the ability to deliver parts that have extremely close tolerances.

Copper Alloys:
One of the most expensive alloys to die cast, it boasts with a high dimensional stability, a high strength and a high resistance to wear and corrosion.
